Freedom isn’t free. Historically, the path to a brighter future has always been paved with the blood, sweat and tears of those who know the value of its benefits. Our beloved country, these United States of America, serve as a beacon of liberty and freedom for the world, like a city that sits upon a hill for all of its citizens save us, the black ones. When will we ever learn? When will we be a country that stands on its promises of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for its black citizens? How long shall we wait, O Lord?
The darkest hour is always near the dawn of the day. As proponents of change and progress, we keep the faith and hope that change for the better is underway in our country even as citizens peacefully protest in response to the killing of George Floyd by the hands of Minnesota police.
Our earnest prayer, O Lord, is this: Remember the families of the innocent slain at the hands of police: George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and countless others whose blood cries out from the grave for justice. Give them understanding, healing and strength to cope and thrive knowing that all is not well in the system of white supremacy. Let them feel your presence of love and joy unspeakable knowing that their loved ones are cradled in your everlasting arms. This is our prayer in Jesus’ name. Amen.
